Buying Firearms
How do I buy a firearm on Alaska Gun Trader?
Buying is simple:
- Browse: Search or filter listings by category, location, price, or condition
- Contact: Use our secure messaging system to reach the seller
- Arrange: Work out details like price, payment method, and meeting location
- Meet: Meet the seller locally to inspect the firearm and complete the sale
We recommend meeting in public places like gun store parking lots or police station safe exchange zones.
What payment methods are accepted?
Payment is arranged directly between buyer and seller. Common methods include:
- Cash: Most common for in-person transactions
- Cashier's check: For higher-value items
- Electronic payment: Venmo, Zelle, etc. (use with caution)
Important: Alaska Gun Trader does not process payments. All transactions are between private parties. Never send payment before meeting in person and inspecting the item.
How do I know if a seller is trustworthy?
While we cannot guarantee any transaction, you can reduce risk by:
- Checking the seller's profile and account age
- Reading any reviews or ratings
- Asking questions via messaging before meeting
- Meeting in a public, well-lit location
- Bringing a friend to the transaction
- Inspecting the firearm thoroughly before paying
- Trusting your instincts—if something feels off, walk away
Can I have a firearm shipped to me?
Federal law requires firearms shipped across state lines to go through a licensed FFL dealer. If you're purchasing from out of state or need something shipped:
- The firearm must be shipped to a local FFL dealer
- You'll complete a Form 4473 and background check at the FFL
- Transfer fees typically range from $25-50
For in-state private party sales, meeting in person is the simplest option.
Selling Firearms
How do I post a listing?
Posting a listing takes just a few minutes:
- Click "Sell/Trade" or "Post a Listing"
- Select the appropriate category
- Add a descriptive title (include make, model, caliber)
- Write a detailed description
- Upload clear photos (up to 10 images)
- Set your price and condition
- Choose your region/location
- Submit for review
Listings are typically approved within a few hours.
What makes a good listing?
Great listings sell faster. Include:
- Clear title: "Glock 19 Gen 5 9mm" not "gun for sale"
- Multiple photos: Show all angles, any wear, included accessories
- Detailed description: Round count, modifications, reason for selling
- Fair price: Research comparable sales
- Honest condition: Accurately describe any issues
How long do listings stay active?
Listings remain active for 60 days. After that, they automatically expire. You can:
- Renew expired listings from your account dashboard
- Edit active listings anytime
- Mark items as sold when they sell
- Delete listings you no longer want active
Who can I sell to?
You can sell to any Alaska resident who is legally allowed to possess firearms. Do not sell to anyone who:
- Is under 18 (21 for handguns from dealers)
- Has been convicted of a felony
- Has been convicted of domestic violence
- Is under a restraining order
- Has been adjudicated mentally defective
- Is an unlawful user of controlled substances
- Is not a legal resident of the United States
Selling to a prohibited person is a federal felony. When in doubt, don't sell.
Legal Information
Is it legal to sell firearms privately in Alaska?
Yes. Alaska is a constitutional carry state with some of the most firearm-friendly laws in the nation. Private party sales between Alaska residents:
- Do not require a background check
- Do not require registration
- Do not require a permit
- Do not require paperwork to be filed with the state
However, federal law still applies. It is illegal to sell to anyone you know or have reason to believe is prohibited from possessing firearms.
Do I need an FFL to sell on Alaska Gun Trader?
For occasional private sales, no. You can sell firearms from your personal collection without a license.
However, if you're "engaged in the business" of buying and selling firearms for profit, you need an FFL. Signs you might need a license include:
- Buying firearms primarily for resale
- Selling firearms frequently as a regular business
- Selling at gun shows regularly
When in doubt, consult with an attorney or the ATF.
Should I keep records of my sales?
While not legally required for private sales in Alaska, we strongly recommend keeping a bill of sale for every transaction. Include:
- Date of sale
- Buyer's full name and address
- Buyer's driver's license number
- Firearm make, model, and serial number
- Sale price
- Both parties' signatures
This protects you if the firearm is later used in a crime or if questions arise about the sale.
Are there any firearms I cannot sell?
You cannot sell:
- NFA items without proper transfer: Machine guns, short-barreled rifles/shotguns, suppressors, and destructive devices require ATF Form 4 transfers through an FFL/SOT
- Stolen firearms: Obviously illegal
- Firearms with obliterated serial numbers: Federal felony
- Undetectable firearms: Must be detectable by metal detector
Standard rifles, shotguns, handguns, and most accessories can be sold privately.
What about selling to someone from out of state?
Selling to a non-Alaska resident requires going through an FFL dealer:
- The firearm must be shipped to an FFL in the buyer's state
- The buyer completes a Form 4473 and background check there
- Some states have additional restrictions on what can be transferred
You cannot legally hand a firearm directly to an out-of-state resident without going through an FFL.
Safety & Security
How do I stay safe when meeting buyers/sellers?
Your safety is paramount. Follow these guidelines:
- Meet in public: Police stations, gun store parking lots, or busy public areas
- Daytime only: Avoid evening or night meetings
- Bring someone: Never go alone
- Tell someone: Let a friend or family member know where you're going
- Trust your gut: If something feels wrong, leave
- Verify identity: Ask to see ID
- Cash in hand: Don't accept promises to pay later
How do I avoid scams?
Common red flags to watch for:
- Buyer offers more than asking price
- Requests to ship before payment clears
- Wants to use unusual payment methods
- Refuses to meet in person
- Pressure to complete the transaction quickly
- Poor grammar or communication that seems automated
- Story keeps changing
If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
What if I encounter a problem with a transaction?
If you have issues:
- Contact the other party: Many issues are misunderstandings
- Report the user: Use the report button on their listing or profile
- Contact us: Reach out through our contact page
- Contact authorities: If you've been defrauded, file a police report
Note: Alaska Gun Trader is a listing platform. We cannot mediate disputes or recover funds from transactions between users.
